Genealogy Simple & Fun has to be put on hold!

As you can see I haven't posted in a while. The time seems to fly by with well intentions of keeping up with this blog but time just doesn't permit me to do that so I have to put this genealogy blog on hold. Genealogy is my passion and will never give it up but with all that is going on and so many things happening right now I have to say good-by for at least a while. I just can't keep up and that's not fare to my readers.

I'm hoping in the near future I will be able to come back and resume my work. Please take the time to check out the blog, it has many great articles. If you have any questions or just want to leave me a comment, please do. I will still receive the info and will gladly respond.

See you in the future!

Moved Daughter to UNA

After catching up on emails and find the surprise about the award, I have finally have time to let all of you in on what has been happening around my house. Last weekend we moved our daughter up to Florence, Alabama to attend the University of North Alabama. This is her 1st year so was a new experience for her and for us.

You don't realize what all is evolved until you have to do it. There was so much we had to buy and then when we were actually moving her in, making the bed up, arranging things you come across things you have to go get. I think we were at WalMart 3 or 4 times but it was all worth it.

She is having a wonderful time so far. The University of North Alabama is a wonderful college. They are a 2A school so just not as big as a 1A, which makes it nice. This whole week the school has activities like, concerts, movies, plays, barbecues, volley ball games and I could go on and on. You don't find these at your 1A schools. This is a great way to meet students and facility. I know she will enjoy her years there.

Now maybe mom and dad can try to get back to normal and mom back to genealogy, which has been put on the back burner for about a month now. I have so many things that need to be done, guess one thing at a time!

Daily Reviewer Award

WOW! I got a surprise today. Opened my email and received a very surprising award:

"Top 100 Blogs" award from The Daily Reviewer. What a nice honor to see that my genealogy blog has been recognized. It's always a good feeling when you are just a normal person blogging, not a big company, to find out that others really enjoy reading what you have posted.

I would like to thank The Daily Reviewer for their recognition, "Thank You!"

You can see my award in the left-hand column.

Alabama Department of Archives and History

The Alabama Department of Archives and History has finally finished the Alabama Civil War Service Cards File and is available for search A-Z online.

"This database was created from an 8 x 5 card file maintained by the Alabama Department of Archives and History from the early 1900s until 1982. As staff came across information related to Alabama individuals during the American Civil War, a card was created. Information on individuals exempted from military service, or who served in the militia or home guard, is included. Soldiers from other states that have some connection to Alabama are also included. If new information was discovered from another source, another card was created. Multiple cards for an individual often exist. Sources include muster rolls, governors' correspondence, veterans' censuses, manuscript collections, newspapers, and pension records. Names, places and events are often inconsistently spelled. This card file is in no way inclusive. Not every individual who served from Alabama is present in the card file. Every card contains empty fields. Because much of the documentation relating to the Army of Tennessee was lost, soldiers that served in that army tend to be poorly documented. The cards are arranged alphabetically by last name. Since all of this information is available online, the actual cards are closed."

You can search the card files here.

Been Around But!

As you can see I haven't been around much. Time has gotten away from me and posting has just been put on the back burner. Life has been pretty busy lately so not much time for genealogy. I'm hoping after we get our daughter to the University of North Alabama and our son in Jefferson State, I will have more time for genealogy and posting to this blog, which I love to do!

In the mean time you will see something new every now and then but not as often as I would like. So please take some time and look over the other 102 posted articles within my blog and enjoy!

See you around!

Lafayette Street Cememtery, Decator, AL

On August 1, 2009 the family went to Dector, AL to visit the Civil War walking trails. One of the stops was this cemetery, which you can see from the pictures; it looked like someone with a sledge hammer had come in and destroyed the graves. I have no idea how long this has been this way or even if the Morgan County Historical Society has even done anything to the cemetery but this just made me sick. We walked around to see if we could read any names and we couldn't.

This is just terrible!!

First, Second, Cousin, Removed?? What??

Do you get confused when someone says "Your are my Third cousin once removed?" This seems to be the hardest thing to understand. Over at Dick Eastman's site he explains it so you can understand. Take a look!

Ellis Island

Did you know that the last immigrant into the United States to be processed at Ellis Island arrived in 1954. The little island at the foot of Manhattan remains a symbol of all of America's hopes.

In American Passage: The History of Ellis Island (Harper), UMass history professor Vincent J. Cannato colorfully and engagingly recounts the history of the port of entry, from its 19th-century hosting of pirate hangings to its role today as an important touchstone for the descendents of immigrants—12 million were "inspected" at the gates between 1892 and 1924, its busiest years.

In the 1980s, rehab of the facility was begun under the aegis of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, and today it houses the Ellis Island Immigration Museum and the American Immigrant Wall of Honor.

And did you also know that you can search for FREE your ancestor. Yes, if you know or think that your ancestor was among the millions that came through Ellis Island your just might find them among the list. Also how would you like to find the ship's name that they arrived on. You can now search all the ships that entered the Port of New York from 1892-1924. Easy to read alphabetized lists of ship names and passengers.

Enjoy!

Finding NARA Genealogy Records Online

Well, I hope everyone had a great 4th of July celebration. I sure did. Lots of family here to visit for the 1st time and we had a ball. The meaning of family is price lists!

Now down to business. I'm trying to catch up on emails and several things of interest have come up.

1. Over at Family Tree Magazine website they have a great list of sites that you can go to to try and find your ancestors military records. Some are paying sites but if you don't have an account with them then post your inquiry on your surname mailing list and you will probably find someone that can look it up for you.

2. There is a great new site just for genealogy research. It's called Genealogy Wise. They are a social site just for genealogists. It looks like it could be a great place to post your brick walls, connect with others searching the same names and of course offer your help to others as they offer help to you. I have only registered with them but will be looking closer at it. Check it out, you just might make a discovery!

Web Only Friday - Genealogy Books

Genealogy is offering great deals on three of their best-selling genealogical publications. Between now and 11:59 p.m. EDT on Friday, June 19, 2009, you can purchase Leonard Ashley's Whats in a Name?, Michael Tepper's American Passenger Arrival Records, and Martha McCartney's Virginia Immigrants and Adventurers, 1607-1635

Whats in a Name:
Nobody in America knows more about names than Prof. Ashley, and his book will tell you the facts behind the names of persons, places, and things; about how names are chosen for business and for success; how they are used for everything from tracing settlement patterns to telling fortunes; how forenames have their fashions; where surnames had their origins; all about names in the U.S. and around the globe. This book will both entertain you and inform you as it covers names and nicknames, trick names and married names, place names, street names, good names and bad names, and much more!
Was $17.95
Today Only $10.95

American Passenger Arrival Records:
This work examines passenger arrival records in their historical and legal framework, and explains what they contain, where they can be found, and how they can be used. In effect, it is a road map through the mass of records and archival resources documenting immigrant arrivals from the time of the earliest settlements to the passage of the Quota Acts three centuries later. This new edition features expanded coverage of colonial emigration records, finding aids and reference materials, National Archives microfilm programs and publications, current projects, and new developments in immigration research.
Was $14.95
Today Only $8.95

Virginia Immigrants and Adventurers, 1607-1635:
From the earliest records relating to Virginia, we learn the basics about many of the original colonists: their origins, the names of the ships they sailed on, the names of the "hundreds" and "plantations" they inhabited, the names of their spouses and children, their occupations and their position in the colony, their relationships with fellow colonists and Indian neighbors, their living conditions as far as can be ascertained from documentary sources, their ownership of land, the dates and circumstances of their death, and a host of fascinating, sometimes incidental details about their personal lives.
Was $49.95
Today Only $29.95

Remember these are only good for today until 11:59 pm

The Family History Research Toolkit

Working on "Genealogy Housekeeping" I just found a site that I had saved and wanted to share. During the years I have had many, many forms that I have used. Some I like and others I have altered but still am not satisfied with. Then I had run across the Family History Research Toolkit.

The toolkit has forms and charts for your Genealogical Research that was created by Michael Hait. The main reason I wanted to share is that you can digitally fill in and share them by email which is one of the biggest thing Genealogy Researchers do, is share. The forms are all in PDF form so you can save them on your computer plus there all on a CD so you don't even have to download to your computer; when you need a new form just open and save the one you want to work with.

Go check it out!
The Family History Research Toolkit

WOW! Time Goes Fast!

Graduation went great and family have left for now. Thing have slowed for a while so am trying hard to get caught up. Just can't believe my kids are all grown and getting ready to leave the nest. I don't seem old enough for all this but fun times are ahead, visiting them in college, college sports etc. The hardest will be when I actually leave the campus for home. Trying not to think on that just yet.

Anyway -

I have several items that I will be posting soon.

I am trying to take this time and do what I call "Genealogy housekeeping." In other words going through everything genealogy related on my computer and things I have burned on CD's. Putting items in there right folders, discovering that I have duplicates of and deleting them.

This is what happens when you don't stay on top of your genealogy research. You search, read and keep everything for future reference. You either put in one folder that ends up bursting at the seams full of information or is scattered all over the place and if you are like me you start out putting everything where it belongs but as time goes on you get lazy and just stick it in that folder you tell your self you'll come back to and organize later.

So there are times you just have to say "STOP". Now is the time to reorganize, rethink then hit it again.

I will be soon visiting Virginia again for genealogy research and if I don't do my "Genealogy Housekeeping" now I wont be ready for Virginia.

When I did I received an email from a person that I just thought he had walked a cemetery and posted the grave on line but come to find out he is my long lost cousin.

My great-great-great grandfather, William Cloud Mills, had a younger brothers which is where my new cousin descends from. Now for talking and exchanging info.
